Researching the market place

NME.

For the research into the marketplace I decided to do a little research into the music magazine NME as the style of music that they cover is similar to the indie genre that I want to focus my magazine on. NME's regular content will often be things such as gig information and reviews on performances and new albums they are a weekly up to date magazine giving readers all the information on the indie rock and alternative music scene. As for featured articles these vary every week but will often be a exclusive interview with an artist or band from that Genre.
My research gave me the following information about the NME magazine;

Q Magazine.
Q magazine is the UK's biggest music magazine and is another magazine that focuses on a similar genre of music as my magazine is intended to be as well as a variety of other music types, the magazine would be a competitor for my magazine and is one of the leading music magazines on the market. Again as in NME featured articles will more than likely be exclusive interviews with bands and artists as well as numerous specials In that issue. Because Q is a monthly magazine their regular content is much more varied as they have more content to feature than a weekly music mag.

Again like the previous two magazines Mojo s another potential competitor for my music magazine focussing on a similar genre and with a similar target market. Mojo is mainly focused on the classic rock genre so it is not too alike my magazine however their are similarities between the two magazines and would defiantly attract similar readers.

Although the genre of my magazine isn't dance this magazine still appeals to the same target audience most importantly men, the amount of male readers of Mixmag is significantly higher than most music magazines and is focused on the male reader. Mixmag is also a exceptionally big magazine on the music magazine genre. Uncut Magazine.
Uncut magazine is a magazine released monthly concentrating on the rock and alternative genre, Uncut traditionally focuses on older style of rock and is aimed at a slightly older target audience than most other music magazines that I have researched.
